Whistler 92

1992

Ryan and I happened to be up Whistler the weekend of the Westbeach Classic competition.

This particular day I had a little Olympus rangefinder camera from the 1970s . Its fastest shutter speed topped out at 1/500 of a second, which, as you can see, is right at the edge of freezing motion. In addition to emphasizing the snowboarder, the 42mm lens on this camera also allows for clear viewing of the spectators on the far edge of the half-pipe.

The sun came and went.

In those days I rolled my own film and developed it myself.

I was in art school at that time, happily spending an inordinate number of hours in the darkroom. These photographs are scanned and printed with the signature black edges, referencing a darkroom technique used to show the full-frame, uncropped film.

My art school training did not focus on sports photography, or documenting snowboarding subculture. Like other personal projects these images were shelved for many years.
